Colour Your Manadala Meditation (Culture Days event)

In this hands-on 60-minute workshop, you will select a black and white mandala line drawing that represents a symbol of balance, wholeness, centeredness, and harmony. Then use paints, felt pens or pencil crayons to colour your own personal mandala. We invite you to use our colouring materials or bring your own if you prefer. The act of creating your own mandala can be a meditative experience in and of itself. After 45 minutes of meditative colouring, we will do a 10-minute sitting meditation, in a chair or on the floor, with each participant focussing on their very own mandala. Yoga mats and bolsters are available to use if you choose to sit on the floor. This free event is being organized as part of North Van Culture Days.

Note: To encourage a distraction-free environment for our meditation, we respectfully request that workshop participants are at least 12 years old.

Shakti Mat Yoga & Meditation Workshop w/ Nicole Du Guay (special out-of-town guest)

COST = $30 (+ gst)

Limited space available. Please pre-register.

Shakti Mats:

Shakti Mats are known to help reduce stress and tension, promote sleep, promote muscle recovery, increase circulation, relieve back pain, headache & so much more.  Regular use of the Shakti Mat helps promote blood flow, encourages muscle tension release, stimulates the release of endorphins and oxytocin (those “feel good” hormones that help reduce bring a sense of calm), helps develop postural awareness, helps us learn to connect with our breath, helps stimulate various acupressure points to invigorate and re-energise the body & mind and also helps to cultivate resilience by offering an opportunity to learn how to better support, encourage and coach ourselves through a difficult or painful experience. In this workshop, we will use the mats through our practice to help promote these qualities.

shakti (good clear pic).jpeg

The Workshop:

In this workshop we will use the Shakti Mats through various gentle yoga poses to help cultivate the qualities the mats offer.  A major focus will be on learning to calm the mind through breath and supportive self-talk in order to learn ways to effectively release resistance and create more ease and flow in the body.  Through learning these qualities on the Shakti Mats, we will become better able to draw on them for life experiences off the mat as well.  No experience or knowledge of the Shakti Mats or yoga is necessary. Come with an open mind & heart, playful curiosity and a blanket for comfort!  See you there!

- A hands-on cooking class: "Balanced meals don’t have to suck"

Join Rachel and Kendall for a beautiful spring weekend, where balance is about living your best life! Eat cake with us. Fall out of a pose or two. Go ahead, drink that glass of wine. We’ll get our stretch on and chow down on real foods to nourish our bodies and souls. Get ready to reinvigorate yourself! This is a chance to push aside thoughts of how things are supposed to be done and embrace how we want to live. Let’s start building a lifestyle that doesn’t take effort; the kind of lifestyle that has us drinking beers after a hike.

Finding balance is often associated with reaching perfection... eating kale for every meal and working out at 5am 5 days/week (with a smile on your face). We all know this can be challenging to keep up in the long run. Rachel and Kendall approach balance a little differently: Eat to feel good and move to feel great! Repeat.

Food is more than calories, it’s connecting with friends over a glass of wine and the bliss of a single perfect bite. Food is more than food when we slow down to enjoy it. And yoga is more than exercise. It’s respite from your crazy day and a community which embraces falling down. It’s finding your breath in the spaces between the chaos of life. This weekend will have both, and more, including wine tasting, an essential oils workshop, and a hands-on cooking class. We can’t wait to hang out with you!

Where is TULAMEEN, BC you ask? Tulameen, originally known as Otter Flat, is a small community in BC, about 26 kilometres northwest of the town of Princeton on the Crowsnest Highway (Hwy 3), and about 185 kilometres east-northeast from the city of Vancouver.

YOUR HOSTS:

KENDALL GUSTAVSON - Owner of The Modern Pantry

KENDALL GUSTAVSON - Owner of The Modern Pantry

Kendall works with companies and individuals to build thoughtful consumption into daily life through engaging classes, workshops, and events. She started her work in food education after obtaining a Masters degree in Food Culture from the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, Italy. Her work has taken her to London, England to develop a food education program for Borough Market - one of the largest and oldest markets in the world - as well as Provence, France to connect curious “foodies” to the people and traditions which remain alive in the countryside.

She believes that food is a fun, central part of daily life and that its social importance cannot be reduced to calorie counting. For Kendall, finding the balance between kale and cake is all about eating real food and slowing down enough to enjoy every bite.

RACHEL ROZEN - Owner & Instructor at The Yoga Root

RACHEL ROZEN - Owner & Instructor at The Yoga Root

I found Yoga more than a decade ago, during a time in my life when I was battling extreme anxiety and panic attacks.  It gave me the tools I needed help calm my mind and ground my body.  I began to practice it regularly.  Yoga became my guide from this point forward, whether I was conscious of it or not, on and off the mat.  Years later, I realized that I wanted to expose others to the emotionally healing benefits of Yoga, bringing people peace and strength both physically and mentally.

After receiving my 200-hour Yoga certification through Open Door Yoga Vancouver, I took a leap of faith and left my long-time job as a sales/customer service consultant in the Fashion Wholesale Industry to become a full-time Yoga instructor.  During that time, I also continued my education in Vinyasa/Flow Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga for Youth, and Trauma Sensitive Yoga.

After a few years of teaching, I took another big step and opened my own studio right in the heart of the place where I was raised and have such a strong connection; the gorgeous North Shore!  The Yoga Root was conceived from wanting to take my experience and passion to the next level, and offer a space to those seeking an intimate and connected Yoga practice, while bringing students a sense of community that may be missing from their lives.  My focus is to promote confidence in my students by creating a safe, non-competitive environment.  I offer modifications in postures to ensure that each individual, from the fitness-minded “workout warrior” looking for a little stretching, flexibility and balance, to those struggling with resisting the experience all together, gets the most out of their practice!

YOU fit yoga. Everyone fits Yoga. Yoga is one-size-fits-all!

My experience in music, dance and a teeny bit of Taekwondo runs through my teaching, and I believe that we continually keep learning, no matter our levels of experience. In my classes you will be encouraged to find your genuine, authentic self and, hopefully, clarity moment by moment. Finding what moves you to breathe can be the key to cultivating YOU.  I strive to make my classes accessible and relatable to those of us charging through busy, stressful North American lives.  Join me in shedding the mystic mask of Yoga, and let’s have fun doing it!

Yoga Brain Workshop w/ Larissa Szlavik

Space is limited. Pre-registration is advised.

Investment = $65

YOGA BRAIN: 5-hour Workshop (eligible for Continuing Education Credits)

How can science explain that blissful feeling after yoga practice? Are people who practice regularly wired differently? How does yoga reshape the brain to promote resilience and healing? This workshop will take you on a journey through the dynamic landscape of the brain. Learn the fundamentals of its structure and function to better understand how it changes in response to our experience and vice versa. Explore the neurobiology of specific conditions such as anxiety, depression and stroke. We will discuss compelling evidence for yoga’s effect on the brain to counteract these conditions. Evidence-based practices that promote mental health and healing will be incorporated throughout the workshop.

This workshop is suitable for all levels, and is eligible for CEC credit.

Highlights of topics:

œ Brain plasticity – how experience reshapes the brain and affects how we feel, what we think, and what we do.

œ Stress (the good & the bad) – what you need to know about stress response, and how yoga balances the nervous system.

œ Biology of breath – how breath practices (pranayama) help us ‘hack’ physiology and mood.

œ Yoga ‘high’ – why we feel blissful and ‘buzzed’ after class.

œ Mental health – learn about current research on yoga’s therapeutic effects for various conditions; focus will be on anxiety, depression, and stroke.

Meet Larissa:

Larissa Szlavik (RYT-500) is a skillful facilitator, who brings depth of knowledge and passion to her teaching. With over a decade of experience as a front-line worker alongside individuals with brain injury and mental health challenges and 5 years teaching yoga, she is invested in promoting the therapeutic benefits of yoga for mental health. 5-Day Rocket Yoga Teacher Training w/ Amber Gean (Feb 24 - 28)

THERE ARE STILL SOME SPOTS LEFT!

February 24th - 28th, 2017 (60 credit hours with the Yoga Alliance)

The Rocket was developed by Larry Schultz in the 90’s while on tour with the Grateful Dead. The Rocket consists of poses from traditional Ashtanga Yoga. Larry resequenced the poses from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd series around the joints of the body and the days of the week. By doing this he created a more holistic approach to a regular Ashtanga practice. There are more than 140 poses that your body experiences during one week of consistent Rocket practice.

Tuition = $950 + GST

*Pre-registration is required*

As of now, tuition is due in-full to reserve your spot in the training and you must complete the online teacher training application form (links are below).

TO ATTEND:

This is a 60 hour program with 40 contact hours and 20 non-contact. The training is designed for yogis who have prior experience practicing and instructing yoga. You will learn more advanced sequencing, arm balances and much more, including strengthening your instructing voice and home practice.

The 60 hour Rocket can earn you continuing education hours for Yoga Alliance in the US and has been recently recognized by The Yoga Professional of the United Kingdom as part of 500 hours Rocket training.

The purpose of Rocket advanced training is to share the Rocket philosophy, sequencing and transitions with you. This training will give you the tools to deepen your practice and refine your teaching.

Amber Gean works with a network of studios that feature the Rocket System as taught by Larry Schultz.

Our mission is to give you a strong foundation for your practice to blossom on and off the mat. By practicing living "our yoga and our truth" you will be empowered to create a vision and follow your dreams. Some of our graduates go on to open their own studios as well as travel the world facilitating yoga classes and workshops.

This training takes place over 5 days. Each day you will practice The Rocket Routines, including Rocket 1, 2 and 3. You will also learn a beginners approach to Rocket that we call the Bottle Rocket, so it's easier to introduce the Rocket in your home town.

You will also learn cross training methods for strengthening up for more advanced poses and transitions, including the mechanics of flight.

You will practice developing your verbal instructions to make you a more confident yoga instructor. The Rocket will challenge you to open up to your spiritual fire and awaken a deeper purpose in yourself. We have also developed homework that you can take home with you after the training so you can continue to gain knowledge and experience as a Rocket instructor.

Training Schedule:

Friday, Feb. 24th = 6pm-9pm

Saturday, Feb. 25th = 9am-12pm & 1pm-6pm

Sunday, Feb 26th = 9am-12pm & 1pm-6pm

Monday, Feb. 27th = 8:30am-11:30am & 1-5pm

Tuesday, Feb. 28th = 7:30am-11:30am

A video describing Larry Schultz's Rocket Series

Amber Gean (500-RYT) entered the yoga world with a blast. After she assisted Indu Bala Bhardwaj to open It’s Yoga Cincinnati, she felt inspired to deepen her practice as student and teacher. In Spring 2000, she flew to San Francisco to study with Larry Schultz and flew back to Cincinnati with flowers in her hair and yoga in her bones. By November 2000 she had established herself as a respected teacher, eight classes a week.  She helped facilitate some of the first RYT teacher trainings in Cincinnati. Amber strived to find experienced classical ashtanga yoga teachers, Tim Miller, Lino Miele, and Chuck and Maty Miller, to ground her in the ashtanga lineage. With nearly twenty years experience and ten thousand hours of teaching and training other teachers, Amber shares her depth of wisdom with her students. She offers a dynamic journey into the self, with a gentle approach that truly honors the teacher within each of us. In 2007, she opened Yoga Ah while she continued to work with Schultz at Nauliland (his school in Sonoma) until he passed in 2011. Although a busy mother of two and a studio owner, Amber assembled and wrote a 500-hour training to continue the work that Larry had set in motion. In 2016, the Yoga Alliance Professional, U.K. recognized her training manual. As a pioneer in the Rocket Vinyasa Series, Amber loves to travel around the globe to teach others to teach the modern progression of this powerful lineage, from Krishnamacharya to Larry Schultz.

Devi Yoga w/ Dr Alexina Mehta

Cost = $20 + GST

Space is limited. Pre-registration is advised.

Awakening your divine feminine fire to THRIVE...

Devi Yoga is a movement and meditation practice created by Dr. Alexina Mehta in response to working with so many women in her practice as a Naturopathic doctor and yoga teacher.

"Women need to feel empowered in their bodies to be happy and to heal. I created this practice so women could connect with the most epic role models of empowerment for women: The Goddesses from around the world."

When your divine feminine fire awakens, you feel alive and full of positive energy and hope. We practice 15 different yoga postures, each which honour a specific Goddess from different traditions to help us remember the qualities they symbolize within ourselves.

For example, the pose to honour Durga reminds us that we have strength in the moments when we feel weak. The pose to honour Lakshmi reminds us that a blessing can come to us in any moment, often when we least expect it. This pose teaches us gratitude for blessings to come.

With each posture we learn a meditation, mudra and mantra which connects us even more deeply to the intention of the pose, which is to connect and awaken the quality of the particular Goddess within us.

We also work with plant essences to top off a completely blissful class leaving you feeling happy, hopeful and in gratitude.

Beginner Rocket Yoga Workshop w/ Heidi Joffe

Meditation in Movement. Connect to yourself.

$40 OR $35 Early Bird Price Before Nov. 25th

*Click HERE to register. Pre-Registration is required*

Blast off with the Psychedelic Rocket Series, created by Larry Shultz , named by Bob Weir (Grateful Dead). This workshop will be taught by Heidi Joffe (M.Ed. E-500 RYT). The Rocket Yoga series energizes and opens the body in a dynamic meditation.  As a free-spirited form of yoga based within the Ashtanga lineage, we balance asana (movement), pranayama (breathing) with strong roots (bandhas) and deep focus (drishti). You receive guidelines and principles around the sequence as well as handouts for you to use on your mat at your own time. You’ll learn progressions that easily adapt to different body types, ages, and levels of practice: this yoga is for all those who seek a creative approach to their practice. Designed for life on the road, as well as at home, it trains you to take care of yourself, your true teacher, in a holistic, authentic, flexible practice. Consensual, gentle, 2-finger adjustments may be used in this workshop by Heidi to ensure a safe practice when coming into some intense poses.

A Rocket Definition.. Larry Schultz developed these sequences of postures/asana from traditional ashtanga series to meet modern, mobile, lifestyles. Strength building as well as a practice of breath, focus and energy, the different sequences offer flexibility in time and in your body. Heat builds naturally in the body as we move in a meditation of breath, releasing stress and tension in the body. As a progressive series, it transforms practitioners.

About Heidi Joffe (M.Ed. A.T. E-500 RYT):
My grandmother first taught me about yoga practice from her own dedication to it during her long and healthy life. From sixteen years old, I set the foundations in my own way, from Integral yoga to Shiva Rea, moving from teachers to books with joyful ease. My practice injected a new force into my classroom teaching and consciously I began to pursue yoga in 1997, a year after my son was born. I found a teacher training at It’s Yoga Cincinnati which practiced a form of Ashtanga that sang to my bones. Lucky to have Indu Bala Bhardwaj and Amber Gean as my main teachers, I also had the honor to work with Larry Schultz, the founder of the Rocket series. I moved to Vancouver to open It’s Yoga on Commercial Ave. in 2001. In those early years, teacher trainings with Tim Miller, Danny Paradise, Nancy Gilgoff , Dave Swenson and K.Pattabhi Jois enhanced my abilities as a teacher and student. I continue to renew and learn new forms and concepts to add to my accrued wisdom. Larry’s legacy to his students was a belief in the truth of one’s practice, to keep up the work, and experience the magic of the carpet as it takes you from where you think you are to where you dream of being/becoming. I would also like to extend my deepest gratitude and recognition to my main teacher for the last nine years, James Nicholson. Throughout these years, I have also developed my own practice, on and off the mat. I have single handedly raised two amazing children, worked within schools and community services as an art therapist, and trained as an Adlerian therapist. I own and operate a small textile studio, The Black Cat, which contains my love of weaving, sewing, spinning and dyeing. I live a blessed life on the North Shore, and in gratitude I give myself to the good work of bringing yoga, the union of mind, body and spirit, to all who seek it.

An Evening of Kirtan (chanting & sound) w/ Harmony & Ron (for the whole family!)

$10 + GST

*SPACE IS LIMITED: Click HERE to register. Pre-registration is required.*

Let your heart be touched by the sounds of our divine universe. Come and join us for an evening of kirtan chanting, as we share together in the practice of Bhakti or devotional yoga. No experience is required. Song sheets will be provided. All are welcome. Bring the family!

About Harmony —

Harmony’s dedication to authentic expression, being in service and living an inspired life dwell at the heart of her sound offerings. She deeply believes that the key to our greatest healing can be found in using our voices. Her life long passion for music and singing, and nearly two decades of yoga exploration, come together in the practice of kirtan.

About Ron —

Ron is a devoted and experienced lead chanter and drummer. For more than 20 years he has chanted in over a thousand satsangs, text chants and other programs as a student of his spiritual path. In 2008 he turned his attention to drumming, focusing on the mrdang (or “pakhawaj”). Ron loves the drum and how it can so beautifully support the experience of a chant for all involved. For him, the connection to the divine words of the chant is the highest priority and this awareness guides his playing. He says “Heaven on earth for me is the sacred space created by a group of dedicated musicians and chanters as we chant the divine name and go deep within...together!”

Ron is an enthusiastic practitioner of meditation, contemplation and seva and has been a student of his meditation path and his Guru in 1993. Between 2001-2004, Ron lived and served full-time in a meditation ashram in upstate New York.

When he is not drumming or chanting, Ron is an Integrative Executive Life Coach. His practice, Primary Pathways Coaching & Learning (www.primarypathways.com), helps clients close the most significant gaps in their lives between who they are and who they wish to become, while integrating spiritual practice.  He loves the outdoors and enjoys cycling, hiking, snowshoeing and skiing.

Have you always wanted to get into Acro Yoga but aren’t sure where to start? Have you done a few classes and are ready to step up your game? Then this Acro Yoga foundations progressive series is for you! In this 5 week series we’ll start with the basics and get into the nitty gritty details that will equip you with the skills needed to go deeper into your practice. By the end of our classes together you’ll be basing, flying, and spotting poses and flows you didn’t even know were possible! No need to bring a partner, and all levels are welcome!

Your Guides:

Alicia Graham: Alicia is a Partner Acrobatics teacher, facilitator, and dancer, who frequently combines the three to share experiences of transformation, connection, and authenticity. She is passionate about human connection and completely believes that our capacity for connection is directly proportional to our ability to change the world for the better.

Alicia is certified to teach Partner Acrobatics, Dancing Freedom, and Hatha Yoga. She also works with empathy and non-violent communication in her community life, mediation, and personal relationships. For more information send her an e-mail at alicia@unify.org.

Paul Gelinas: One of my goals in the acro community is to communicate the powerful metaphor of acro yoga to all participants. A playful practice can often surprise us and destroy preconceived ideas of what we tell ourselves is possible. Amongst other things, I use acro as an access point to empowerment and connection. I use playfulness and humour to help participants develop the confidence and skills needed to progress safely and creatively.

I am a co-founder of Vancouver Acro Festival, an active member of the community, and I lead regular acro classes in Vancouver. I have completed a 500 hour yoga teacher training, a 300 hour Yoga Therapeutics training, and have been certified as a personal trainer for nearly 10 years.

When not teaching, I can be found pursuing my endless interest in movement arts, competitively playing sports (though pretending to not be competitive), tending to my garden, exploring BC’s natural landscape, or studying the countless things I'm curious about.

Intro to Qigong w/ Jacob Larmour -- Falling Leaves: Making the transition into Autumn

$40 for 1 yogi

$70 for 2 yogis

*SPACE IS LIMITED: Click HERE to register. Pre-registration is required.*

Falling Leaves: Making the transition into Autumn.

This introduction to Qigong will prepare our bodies, minds and spirits for the change of season and align us with the rhythms of the natural world. Autumn is the season of the Metal element, manifested in the body as our lungs and respiratory system, where we often hold our feelings of loss and loneliness. Through movement, breath and intention, we will release old patterns of stagnant emotional and physical energy, allowing room for new possibilities to show up in our lives. By encouraging the Qi (life force energy) to flow freely through our bodies, we dance through this transition, experiencing it with joy and vibrant energy.

About Jacob Larmour:

Originally exposed to Tai Chi and TCM in the early 1980s, Jacob Larmour has been intensively practicing Qigong for a number of years, studying shamanic Qigong with the Empty Mountain Institute, and Medical Qigong with the International Institute of Medical Qigong. He continues his studies with both of these organizations. He maintains a strong personal Qigong practice, and offers Qigong movement classes and Qi emission treatments in the Vancouver area. Before becoming immersed in the world of Medical Qigong, he spent many years as an organic farmer and operating a jewelry distribution business.

Foundation Training is a series of exercises, created by Dr. Eric Goodman, to alleviate chronic back pain, improve posture and enhance athletic ability by correcting poor movement patterns.

The exercises quickly stabilize the spine and core to balance the effects of our modern lifestyle, which leave most of these muscles weak and imbalanced. Learning basic fundamental human movement patterns means you will move in a more efficient and powerful way, reducing stress on the joints and ligaments and shifting it to the muscles, where it should be.

Over the six weeks you'll be introduced to these simple body weight exercises. Each week we'll gradually refine and add more layers to each movement, developing strong posture and efficient movement patterns that easily integrate into your everyday life.

About Ben:

My aspiration for healing has led me into many fields of study over the last 15 years, from shiatsu and massage to a variety of healing modalities, while my curiosity for exploring consciousness and inner alchemy took me down a path of meditation, IST (Inner Space Techniques), yoga and qi gong. Since discovering the powerful effects of Foundation Training, I have made it one of my primary modalities to share with students, empowering them to take control of their health and well-being.

I bring all of my experience, knowledge and passion together in what I call Inner Alchemy Systems. My goal is to assist those who desire more from their life to achieve their goals: emotional freedom, healing, awakening of your vital energy and opening to what lies beyond your ordinary mind.

Whatever your reason for working on yourself, I encourage a healthy dose of curiosity, wonder and a sense of adventure, because at the heart of what I really offer is a pathway to a deeply rewarding journey of inner exploration and self-discovery.
